The fish market by the port
Pick a fish off the ice — twenty minutes later it arrives at your table from the grill next door. Seafood doesn't get more honest.
Batumi's fish market is rows of counters with the day's catch: red mullet, horse mackerel, flounder, Black Sea anchovy in season. The system has run for decades: buy fish by weight, carry it to the café attached to the market, and they grill it in front of you for a token fee.
Come towards evening when the boats return — that's when the choice is liveliest. Lemon, herbs and a cold Georgian white are sold right there.
